Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Decorative Mirrors has to be one the of the easiest ways to totally transform a room. I especially love these mirrors under $400 at Horchow.

On the left is a criss-cross twig mirror for $295. I think rectangle mirrors look better when they are on the horizon. On the right is a right fretwork motif mirror also for $295. Round mirrors are my favorite because its a great way to break up all those straight lines and angles you usually have in a home setting. This mirror is refreshing and classic in style.

On the left is a metal weave mirror for $235. Metal is so trendy right now. This one has red accents. I would love to see it in person. On the right is a kimani starburst mirror for $350 (of course my favorite is the most expensive). Its covered in tiny little round mirrors. Great detail!

But lets be honest. Why pay for something you can make for next to nothing. These are a couple of my favorite DIY mirrors. I have do many opportunities for a mirror in my home. If I do not find one I really like on  the cheap these are definitely good inspirations. Check them out here on the left on the right (great blog by the way)!

Reality Show Junky

Naima
Okay...I am a sucker for reality shows! But right now I am so loving the style of Naima from American Idol. Her style, swagger, and her voice all have this Neo-Soul flavor! She had this beautiful flowing vintage sequin dress for her judging tonight. She did make it to the TOP 24! I will have to get the picture as soon as it becomes available.
She is like Erikah Badu and Alicia keys all wrapped into one person. I am excited just to see not only what she is going to sing, but what she is going to wear every week! Trust me she will be the style icon for American Idol this year.

I really have not been excited about American idol since Fantasia won her season, but I ma a little giddy about this one, so we shall see what happens!

Feeling Inspired

I love coming home, after a long day at work, to a brand new catalog in the mail. I gasped with each page flip. I even love there new website design. It is so much easier to navigate. Last time I created a style story, I presented you with my wish shopping list from Z-Gallerie and West Elm. With this style story I am presenting my inspiration  for a Crate and Barrel "Sophisticated Springtime Brunch!"

I started with the beautiful Chloe Chair in Bella Porte Citrine fabric. Picture four of these beauties nestled around this gorgeous pedestal table. I love the idea of pairing upholstered chairs in a dining room setting. Conversations are guaranteed to last longer for you and your party guests because of the relaxing and comfortable vibe that the chair provides with its angled back. The low arm profile of the chair will allow these chairs to fit easily under any table. The movement of the pattern in the light fabric would be the perfect contrast to the stiffness of the dark masculine table.

Speaking of tables, how gorgeous is the silhouette of this 42" round Arcadia pedestal table. The dark finish is a multi-step layered antique rub. Its transitional in design and can work in any traditional or contemporary setting. The best feature of this table is that it is a indoor/outdoor table. What a beauty and paired with the citrine color of the chairs will be just stunning!

The table and chairs would be crowned with beauty from the rustic Winston Chandelier topped with linen shades. The lines of this chandelier holds true to the integrity of the lines in the pattern of the chair and the silhouette of the table. Its so classic. The linen shades introduces a natural element into a already naturally soothing color pallette of blues an yellows.

Atop the table will sit a vibrant turquoise Calypso Centerpiece Bowl. Its a green product because its made form recycled glass. The fluidity of the swirls and translucent characteristics in the glass make it the perfect centerpiece for this setting. I could see this filled with green apples or yellow lemons.

The Avery Bombe Chest is the perfect compliment as a buffet server. It too has an antique finish. Over-sized, so lots of storage space come from its three drawers. The rounded front and corners coincides perfectly with all the other silhouettes of this setting. Atop the bombe would sit the complimentary Calypso Vases. Again the fluidity of the vases just like the bowl make them a perfect accessory to sit on top of such a dark masculine piece.

The piece de resistance to this setting would be the strikingly fresh set of three Liquidity Art with framed with crisp white matte. This fluid water color art with its vibrantly fresh colors of blues, yellows, and greens rounds out the entire style story. It really brings home the Springtime feeling.

More Paint On The Walls

We are making progress! We have painted two more rooms, my daughters rooms! Yeah...!! Now they did come with a few hurdles to get over which includes some spilled paint, holes in the walls, and one "I didn't want this color!"

When it came to the paint color, I asked them what they wanted. I really did not even have to ask, it was so predictable. Purple for Brishonne (my oldest at 11 going on 20) and pink for Tyshonne my (second oldest at 10 going on 6).

These are "my girls!" Love them soooo....much! They are a year and a half apart and could not be any more different. Bishonne is scratching the surface a "teenage drama queen!" And Tyshonne is just my "baby girl," because she has not quite come into her age yet. I am not complaining though, because I am in no hurry for them to grow up at all.

It took me a couple trips to Lowe's to sift through some paint chips because I wanted to find the right pink and the right purple for the house. I narrowed them down to four purples and three pinks.

So I bought my sample paints and did my squares. The purple came easy! Although I like the one on the far left, we went with the one on the far right, called Native Lilac by Valspar, for Brishonne. The pinks, not so easy. I got as far as getting the first stroke of the third paint color on the wall and I could not tell the difference between the second and third color.  I thought I got the samples mixed up. Brishonne, thoughtfully, said, "let's just paint all three squares over again," to make sure I didn't mix them up. She then, helpfully, proceeded to grab all three sample containers and splash. Pink paint went everywhere! All over the carpet, her, and the back of my legs. So after a big clean-up, I found out that the two paints are similar when wet. Too bad I could not find that out before all of that. I am not too worried about it because I am replacing the carpet anyways. After all of that we chose the lighter of the three called Irish Rose.

So the paint when on the walls. I was a little afraid after seeing how neon the pink was, especially after going through so many chips to avoid exactly that. But about the holes in the walls...this is one of my pet peeves with my "triple B threat" builder home (Blah, Boring, Builder-Grade). Our dang-on door stoppers is filed under builder grade.

When I first saw them I loved them because they were not the old fashioned ones that stick out of the wall and become a pain in the you know what to vacuum around. They sit on the top of the door hinge behind the doors, so they are hidden. After a few days in the house they were not so lovable. They would get out of place and stop working. We had to keep manipulating them every time we heard the door handle bang the wall, especially int he kids rooms. Eventually we got holes in the walls in all the kids rooms. They even penetrated the doors in Brishonne's room.

But we found the greatest thing at Lowe's. A door stopper wall protector that can be painted. It is so great that we have them everywhere now. Even in the unpainted rooms. This is one of the greatest inventions and I bet if I do some research a home renovator created it.

So here are the finished rooms. Like I said before I was little worried about the pink being so neon, but once the trim paint went on it was fine. Tyshonne got home and griped a little, okay alot, because she said she wanted the darker pink. Her words verbatim were, "that is not the color I chose...I didn't want this color!" Demanding little girl! She was find after sleeping on it. For the ceilings, I went with the same paint in the hallway and in the main living areas. I plan to do some stenciling eventually, but that's down the road.

I will leave you with... some to-dos for the girls rooms:
  1. Put in closet organizers
  2. Replace the carpet
  3. Add ceiling fans (functionality only because it does get warm in there rooms)
  4. Add window treatments
  5. Create furniture plan (this will serve as my purchasing guide)

The Big Empty

I must say I have been holding off on showing you the interior of my home for the longest because its embarrassing as a designer! Its big and empty. It has no life, no personality, no color, and no rhythm which are all the things that I am not. It was built as a builder spec home, so everything is blah, boring, and builder grade (what I call the "Tripple B Threat"). But I do have all these big plans that I have been dreaming up since I have been here. I will share them with you as I journey down the long road of decorating our house and making it our home. First off let me just show you some photos of the main living area that just got painted.

Top left: View of dining room from entry foyer
Middle left: Dining room view
Top right: View of dining room and entry foyer
2nd row left: View of family room into casual dining room
2nd row middle: View of hallway into master suite
2nd row right: View of casual dining room from family room
3rd row left: View of sitting room from entry
3rd row middle: View of hallway down into kids bedrooms
3rd row right: View of divider wall into entry from family room
Bottom row left: View of breakfast bar into kitchen from casual dining
Bottom row right: View of kitchen from kitchen entry

I love the taupe paint color (read more about it here), but hate everything else. I plan to eventually:

In the kitchen...
  • paint the cabinets and replace the hardware
  • add a couple of glass doors to either side of the sink cabinets
  • add a back splash
  • add under cabinet lighting
  • add window treatments
  • double the size of the island and add a butcher block counter top (its so small and not functional at all for such a big kitchen)
  • add a pot rack above the island (always wanted one)
In the main living areas...
  • replace the carpet and tile in the foyer with wood (in the meantime I am planning on taking up the carpet and painting the concrete floor. Any feedback on this idea will be helpful)
  • add window treatments
  • replace all light fixtures
  • move TV cable to divider wall
  • add trim to the top of the divider wall to make it look finished
  • add lighting to plant shelf
Here is what I am using as a guide right now: I created a flow chart showing our traffic patterns of navigation. I also added arrows showing certain focal points that I would like to highlight when I am decorating.

The flow chart helped me with my furniture plan to use as a guide when I am looking to purchase large furniture items. I played with the family room for the longest about how to place the furniture.
The only thing that I have that is staying is my dining room table and chairs. I actually bought it in my mind before I even knew I was buying a house. I love the idea a 72" round ding table. There is no head of the table, so everyone is important. We entertain alot and we always get comments on our dining table. It's definitely a conversation piece.

Oooh... Sweet Belated Valentine

Although we missed out on a Valentine, due to unforseen circumstances, I did still think of a "Sweet Valentine!" I am not 100%, but this 100% beautiful! Just imagine...

You and your sweetie whisk away for a weekend Valentine getaway sequestered in a beautiful shabby-chic cottage on a soothing creek. Very sweet huh!

Take a look at how romantic this little Victorian cottage is. Just enough room for two!

The setting sun would set the mood for a vintage table top setting on top of a white painted distressed round cottage table done up in a pastel pink and lilac purple. Dangling white Christmas lights,  candles in a medley of  shabby-chic candel holders, and a white candelabra chandelier would give off just the right amount of ambient light. I came across this enchanted centerpiece made up of hydrangea in a french compote that would be the perfect sweet little touch of elegance (very beautiful blog, by the way). Antique dinnerware and a contrasting modern purple stemware would round out the setting.

Nothing says romantic and cozy like a Seafood Stew for a dinner entree. Check out the recipe here. Shrimp are so pretty to look at, delicate to touch, and yummy to taste, like me! (Ok, I am getting carried away, back to it! lol) But, I like a good inexpensive wine that I can find at any local supermarket. A bubbly Barefoot Pinot Grigio is great to cook with and great to drink. Strawberries dipped in a milk chocolate fondue would be the best of both worlds, a guilty and not guilty pleasurable dessert.

This is what I would wear!  I am not afraid to say that I am a PLUS size woman. As in the words of my dear twin sister, Laurisa, "Pretty Luscious and Ultimately Sexy!" So I would go for a comfortable yet flattering sleeveless lace top  from Macy's with form fitting Svoboda 'Kate' Stretch Denim Trouser Jeans from Nordstrom. I like a easy to slip on a off shoe like this cork slide by Donal J Pliner from Zappos.

Spring is Blissliving

I just got the Spring/Summer catalog for Blissliving-Home! Faaabulooous.....(I'm singing)! It is inspired by a London-Calling Trend with greys and pops of color like tangerine and mint! I am always in love with their color combos and this one is no disappointment:

Trafalgar Duvet
This is checks done right! This duvet is sooo... versatile because its putty in color and you can use it through all the seasons. The check pattern called Trafalgar is used on a multitude of different applications and colors throughout the catalog.
Tate Throw in Charcoal

Trafalgar Half Apron
Look at how sweet this apron is!

Slip Cover Sofa

We just brought in a new look for our line-up for the Spring Catalog! Its a slip cover sofa. As a designer, I am so happy that we finally brought in this look. Everyone is anxious to see how it does as far as retail! I think its going to be very successful and bring in a certain customer. It took a couple markets to get it, but we finally got it!
As a Visual Merchandiser my job is to make this sofa look its absolute best on a showroom floor. I am involved in this process once the buyer begins to look at it as a prospect for the line-up. I make suggestions to our accessory buyer and our rug and table buyer of what is needed to pull together a full style story (that does not mean I always get what I want). For this particular look I pulled inspiration from other furniture retailers such as Pottery Barn! Here is a tool I use called an index. This is what our accessory buyer takes to market with her.

After market we then go into photo shoot mode.  I create shot sheets which provide detailed info on how the shot needs to look. We shoot all the new product over a two week period in High Point, NC. I was there the week before Christmas. Such bad timing!

I am currently working on a foyer reset for our flagship store where I will feature this group for the Spring. I work with the store manager and give him a detailed set-up packet which includes a floor plan and vignette diagrams. Here is an example:

Once the store has ordered in the product ans set it up using the diagram, I will go and put the last finishing touches on it. I touch everything too! I should have pictures in a couple of weeks once I go. Until then here are a couple of pics from last Spring.

Hope you like them! I will have the other ones up as soon as they are done! As in the words of one of my dear friends..."Peace and and Prosperity!" Love you Yataye!

Coupon Day

Today in my Seven Days of Valentines I created some Valentine coupons for my kids. I used Publisher business card format and printed them off one by one.  All I need to do is cut them and bind them with just a simple ribbon.

A few other ones I made up were; one hour control of the remote, 30min past bedtime, favorite food night, ice cream cone, bubble bath I am going to see how this works out!

Speaking of bubble baths, I did not forget about my hubby. I am going to make him a romantic bubble bath with the works! Rose petals, burning candles, and classic jazz. All the works!

Black and Bling

Z-gallerie featured what I am calling a "Black and Bling" style story on their email blast. Hands down my all time favorite! Here is what I am loving!
Angelique Mirror
This would make a great dresser mirror!
Mariposa Collection
Finials are great decorative additions for any vignette. I like to keep them in sets of three or two with a floral!

Bedford Table Lamp

This is one stallion of a lamp!

Sweets For My Sweets...

Today in my Seven Days of Valentines I prepared my family a delicious meal with love. In Sandra Lee fashion, I kept it smart, simple and semi-homemade! On the menu was a whole baked chicken with potatoes, carrots, bell pepper, and onion. This dish was served with a side of rolls and caeser salad with a twist. For dessert I whipped up some brownies sprinkled with powdered sugar.

As much as I love cooking I never really get a chance to cook from scratch or as homemade fresh as I would like to. My ideal dinner would start at the market and end at the dinner table all in one day. But thanks to things like bagged lettuce, frozen rolls, and boxed brownie mix I am able to get as close to it as possible.

Whole Baked Chicken
I start by seasoning the chicken and cutting up my vegetables. In a matter of five minutes its in the oven and ready to serve after about 45min.

Bake and Serve Dinner Rolls
These rolls are a big hit with my kids and my husband. They are frozen dough balls that you pop into a muffin pan 3 hours before you put them in the oven. I take them out as soon as I get home.

Caeser Salad With a Twist
I buy the romaine hearts in a bag from Publix. They come as two, which one heart makes one salad. I add fancy shredded parmesan cheese, feta cheese, bacon bits, and croutons.

Brownies Sprinkled With Powdered
Sugar
I used decadent boxed brownie mix with walnuts by Duncan Hines. Instead of water (which the recipe calls for) I always use milk. Its just something I adopted from my grandmother. I use the cake like recipe. I top it off by sprinkling powdered sugar over the top of them.

So this was just another small gesture of love for my family! They loved it and they loved me for especially the dessert!

Me & My Boo!

I am a busy woman. Between work and family I rarely get personal time, yet alone time to spend with my boo! My husdand and I are high school sweet hearts. I love my hubby and I must say we make a great team. We are hardworking individuals and that is what we like to instill in our kids. In order to keep things comfortable he works a day job and a part-time job in the evening. So he does not get home until 9pm. I work a day job and my evenings are devoted to what I call my 24/7 job which are my kids. Every hard working Mom knows the daily routine of the work week, and let me just say that each one of these are full-time jobs within themsleves.
  1. Work
  2. Homework
  3. Sports or any other extra curriculum activities
  4. Dinner
  5. Bedtime
Weekends are hard too because the older three kids all play three different sports. So weekends are usually spent either at a baseball field, softball field, basketball court, or soccer field. Sometimes we have to split up because game times or sports may overlap.

Don't get me wrong...I am not complaining! I would not trade my life for anything or anyone. I love the fact that I can do for my family. This is part of what makes me who I am!

So my question is how do you get that time with your boo?

My husband try to make a good effort. We have local jobs so we are able to have lunch with each other  if our schedule allows. We do try to do that at least once a week, and we do not eat out all the time! Since we have local jobs we can come home. We also talk to each other on the phone at least three times a day just to check in. I send him a "Good Morning My Love" email every morning. (I try not to forget) He always responds with a "Hello My Sugar Pie!" Cute ha! It always comes right on time, though!

This is the time you get all giddy and lovey-dovey! I would like to know what are some things that other hardworking couples do to get those precious moments with your boo? Maybe I can get some more ideas!

Seven days of Valentines!

I was just sitting and thinking of what I would like to do for Valentines Day this year. There is no fun in anticipating a holiday that happens only one time out of the year. I have to think about when and how I am going to celebrate with the kids, when and how I am going to celebrate with my husband, and what should I buy them to keep it from being a repeat of last year, etc…? So I thought…

Self:  “Why agenize over what we should do for Valentines?”
Myself: (light bulb lights up) “Why wait?”
Self: “There are seven days left until Valentine’s Day!”
Myself: “Why don’t I celebrate seven days of Valentines?”
Most holidays are usually celebrated only on day out of the year. So, I am going to embark another “New Beginning” and celebrate 7 days of  Valentines this year with my babies and especially my boo!
I want to kick off my 7 days of Valentines by writing a love note to the ones I love the most! Normally, I would run out to the nearest store and buy something cute that I end up wishing I had not bought in the first place. I decided to make a resolution this year to focus more on what I have instead of what I don’t have. So with that, I went around the house and gathered some things I have just sitting around:
Not much at all! Now what to do??? My idea is to hang a note on each one of their doors so they can have it before they go to bed tonight and have sweet dreams. So this is what I came up with:

You are the cutest and absolute best!
You and Me are meant to be! Will you be my 7 day Valentine?
I love you 365 days of the year!
You are sweeter than candy!

No shortage of corny sayings here!

This is what I actually used:

  1. construction paper
  2. any paper with a graphic design
  3. notebook paper
  4. sachet/black ribbon ( I had to rob Peter to pay Paul)
The kids loved it! After looking at me a little crazy...my husband loved and appreciated too! Just a small no cost gesture to show them how much I love them! What better way to have an excuse to do something so corny, but so loveable in true Valentine holiday spirit for the ones I love the most!
